Role of a Coach in Athlete Development Jarod Pender The famous basketball coach of UCLA that set the record for most championships, John Wooden once said I think the teaching profession contributes more to the future of our society than any other single profession. Coaches play an important role in the development of young athletes that carries on with them as the becoming adults. The most important factor in an athletes development is how they are treated by the coach. As we will see coaching is an important building point in the lives of young athletes and this is a main factor in how they develop into adults. From being a parent like mentor to these athletes and showing them important skills it is important that coaches take good care of their athletes. An important point made by John Wooden is that Young people need models, not critics. John wooden was a pioneer in coaching and clearly his methods worked because he had an astounding record and many titles to his name from his success at the UCLA. He broke the record of winning 7 c hampionships in a row and won ten in twelve years. His coaching standards have been changed from modern times but he set a winning standard in coaching, and many of these ideals in the following were his ideals. From many of the points that will be brought up in this paper you will be able to distinguish the difference from acceptable coaching to poor coaching. Firstly, Coaches have an important part in the development of the physical growth of young athletes. Coaches have a strong say in how much athletes exercise and stay in shape. Many coaches have their athletes highly active in lifting weights or conditioning. Some coaches have their athletes work too hard and they put their bodies at risk for injury that they have to continue in fear of losing playing time. Many athletes do not realize that they can speak up about the pain and that they think they have no say in the matter, but they do its their body. If an athlete is too scared to speak up about an injury then the coach is putting too much pressure on the athlete and is putting them at high risk for injury. An athlete has a right to keep his own body safe and healthy, but if the coach only wants to win then they might feel pushed to keep playing through the pain. As we look throughout this paper we will see this is only one of many bad characteristics of a bad coach and this alone ca n not only risk the athletes health, but it can ruin the ability for the athlete to trust people close to them. It is common in basketball for coaches to run their athletes until they puke or just about. When coaches do this they put their athletes in danger of exhaustion, heat stroke, and possible sicknesses. Coaches need to understand where to draw a line between improvement and damage. It is the same way for lifting weights if an athlete is doing too much they can put themselves at risk. Also coaches of all sports need to realize that they need safe, but aggressive drills to keep their athletes safe and allow them to last the whole season without excessive injuries. Secondly, Coaches have an important part in the development of the mental growth of young athletes. Coaches can play many roles for athletes in life such as: father or mother figures, mentors, a boss, or friend. Based on this we can see how the coach will develop the athletes mental growth. If the athlete thinks of the coach as a father or mother figure the athlete probably is a positive, but strong influence on the athlete pushing them to succeed allowing them just enough pressure to grow, but not letting them break. If the coach is viewed as a boss the athlete probably does not expect much from the coach besides coaching and improving as an athlete, they will not look for support or encourage from this coach. If the coach is viewed as a friend, then the athlete just wants encourage from the coach and will not likely want this coach putting lots of pressure on them. As athletes get older they can handle more information, stress, and other things that come with being an athlete, but certain coaches control when they grow into this. Many athletes experience a coach when they are young that is considered a bad coach, one who puts winning above his players, this grows into the player over the years. What many players do not realize is maybe that middle school coach or even younger set them up for how they handle pressure in the future from a development in their young years. With this mental growth can come the ability to play mind games with the athletes which indeed can cause damage to the athlete in their ability to trust people long term without worries of alternative motives? Thirdly, Coaches have an important part in the development of the spiritual growth of young athletes. Many athletes in Christian demographics look to their coach for guidance as they can relate to being a Christian athlete, but this can get tricky. Depending on the coach whether or not they are Christian can affect the role they play on the athlete. Obviously if he or she does not give good spiritual advice because he or she is not a faith oriented coach it is going to cloud the judgment of the athlete. Another issue is if the coach is a Christian and he or she pushes Christian ideals, but he or she does not follow them when he or she coaches his or her athletes. Many people would agree with the statement do not talk the talk, if you can not walk the walk because if you tell your students you need to be encouraging as a person to be a Christian, but are a jerk coach then you set a horrible example. Like many things even if it is not spiritual, if you can not follow your own rules you set for your players then you should not force your athletes to follow them. In a world where hypocrisy is flourishing it makes it hard to set a standard and follow it, but if you can not absolutely follow the rules you set for your athletes maybe you need to seek help so you can fix this problem you have. At these youth and teen ages many kids are looking for a spiritual mentor and if someone ruins this for them at a young age then it might ruin how they grow up in the faith, which could force them from it all together. We all need someone to guide our way if we do not then we can fall prey to the random evils around us everywhere. Most kids if they do not have good role models in cities where crime can be a problem they can get involved with the wrong kids or crowd and lead a poor lifestyle. When these kids follow these poor lifestyle choices it can lead to drugs, abuse, gang activity, jail time, or just a poor life because they did not take things seriously and they let it go to waste. Fourthly, Coaches have an important part in the development of young athletes self-esteem. Many studies show that if a child is supported as a child that he or her will have a better chance of being confident growing up. It is the same for children who are constantly put down they will have confidence issues when they grow up. While yes some kids can be supported still growing up not confident in themselves or the complete opposite make an adult of themselves after being left alone. While these studies are evident I think there is one thing that can link many of these cases together, many people in their lives attempt to play at least one sport. While many people play on sport in their life it is often they quit after one sport because they are discouraged and thus do not feel like they want to be bad at something. Many of these people lacked one thing in their experiences: a good coach to encourage them to keep trying, motivating parents, or the drive to succeed. While you do not al l three to be a good athlete have a coach that encourages can make up for the lack of the other too. While not everyone can have supportive parents it is important that coaches can play a little bit of that parenting role by being there for the athlete and supporting them. While there may be a lack of studies proving that coaches play such a high role in the development of athletes I really believe in the next ten years it will be clear and evident how coaching effects these athletes long term. When we see these effects we will be able to identify who had good, moralistic coaches and those who had the bad coaches through their development. While yes there will be variations and deviations from the pattern like the successful business man or woman, or whatever genders will exist in ten years, who pushed through the abuse and degradation of his skills, attitude, or himself from his high school coach to use it as a motivation to succeed and be better. Fifthly, Coaches have an important part in the development of how young athletes handle pressure. If young athletes are giving large amounts of pressure this can over load how they handle things, while it may prepare them for the future you should never put too much pressure on a youth athlete. If you put too much pressure on a young athlete he or she might quit the sport, become discourage, or just easily become frustrated. Pressure management is an important role in coaching youth as they are the future of our sports and world. Growing up playing sports I can agree when a coach puts too much pressure on an athlete a couple of things may happen: one the athlete overcomes the pressure pleasing the coach, the athlete does an average job not over impressing the coach, or the kid completely crumbles under the pressure. If the athlete completely crumbles under the pressure it could leave a lasting impression on the athlete mentally and emotionally, which could stay with them way until th ey are a grown adult making big decisions. If an athlete can consistently succeed under pressure the coach will obviously put more focus and effort into coaching this athlete over others because he or she will help the team more. Most athletes fall into the middle category they complete the task, but it is not as impressive and does not leave wow factor. These athletes are going to either grow into people who can take pressure more than before, will stay as mediocre, or some will fall into the problem of crumbling under pressure. It is important while these young athletes are growing to realize that how much pressure we put on them can affect them for the rest of their lives, but if we take it for granted we can let our goals come before the development of these young athletes we are trying to grow. While pressure can come from good or bad coaching it is how these coaches handle the pressure they give and how they react to the outcome of the athletes response to pressure. Some coach es may put pressure on the athletes to try out a starting spot for multiple athletes, which develops competition which helps develop aggressiveness for fighting for the spot. On the opposite spectrum a coach could put too much pressure on an athlete and then freak out on the athlete when he or she is not good enough for the coachs expectations. Many criminals and addicts have something in common, they were missing a role model in life. Many of these people realize that your parents can not always be your role model, that it where coaches come into play. Many sources believe that the longer that athletes stay in sports the more likely they are to stay out of trouble, which is due to the fact in sports kids have to have decent grades, stay drug free and stay out of trouble in school to stay eligible for their sport. Even to the fact that people admit if they would have stayed in sports they would not have gotten hooked on drugs, joined a gang, or even just kept on a better path. In my life I have personally seen friends who have stopped playing sports and their lives really took a turn for the worst. Luckily I have not had any friends fall into drug addiction, but while I have not experienced this there can be 15 people in Adrian alone who have seen or been in this exact situation. Sixthly, the development of young athletes can be drastically changed by the effects of bad coaching. While many coaches work hard to improve the lives of the many young athletes that come through their programs, it does not matter how many good coaches there are because there will always be bad coaches. What is considered a bad coach you may ask? Well if you do more than one of the following you may be a bad coach: yell at players constantly, do not encourage them, pressure them into playing through injuries, lack patience, are hypocritical in your coaching, play favorites, play mind games, force them to keep what happens in practice a secret, coach with a negative attitude, say your team is the worst you have coached, degrade players. If you take part in one or more of these activities in practices, games, workouts, or any other setting where you are the coach then you may be a bad coach. While many coaches who are completely awful coaches may not know they are a bad coach, there a re a few who do realize what they do. If you realize you bully your athletes you need to either change or quit, because you are only helping yourself with the salary if all you do is breakdown your athletes every day in and out. These tendencies can easily be passed down if you ingrain it into the minds of your athletes. One of the main problems is that many coaches who partake in these problems have good teams or programs so while they are awful coaches, they still get wins which makes them look unlikely to get fired. It can seem impossible for some coaches who bully their athletes who coach in a good program to get fired but as soon as they have a bad season they have good chances of getting fired. With these chances sometimes being slim it can be difficult for parents to deal with these hard to work with, devil like beings, the best thing you can do is try and encourage your athlete and try and make sure to keep the coach in check as much as possible. While you may be tempted to talk to the athletic director sometimes the athletic director is very bias towards protecting who he or she has hired and will not do anything against the coach even if he or she is truly wrong which happens commonly at schools all crossed the country. Seventhly, the development of young athletes can be drastically improved by the effects of good coaching. While it might be easier said than done if you just say be the opposite of the last paragraph, it is not that simple. To be a good coach you have to have a love for three things: God, your athletes, and the programs development. Having a strong spiritual structure can help make your coaching easier because following the bibles teaching helps your be more encouraging. Also none of the things that make a bad coach are good in the bible so it is easy to stay on track. The other step of having a love for your athletes. To be a good coach you need to truly love your athletes, not the jerry Sandusky type of love, but the type of love that you view the athletes as sons or daughters. If you view the athletes in your programs like sons and daughters it makes it much easier to make the right decisions for these young athletes, which in the long run will make you a better coach then before. If you love someone like a daughter or son you will treat them with respect, tough love, and will want the best for them. Lastly you need to have a love for the program. A good coach just does not care about his current team, but he or she cares about the future of the program. Good coaches constantly have camps for the future of the program so they can develop their future teams better. If the coach only cares about the current team and not the future of their program they may lose young athletes to other programs or schools simply because they payed more attention to the young athletes. This has become a growing trend in many programs in the past years as they need the future to succeed in weaker years. Many good coaches use this technique to build solid programs for many years because if a varsity coach works with elementary kids they will be more likely to stay and possibly bring friends to the school as well. Also if a younger athlete has better skills to improve to future tea ms the more likely the coach will keep his job if he or she has multiple years off success. The problem with this is in year of skill and ability drought he or she may decide to play under classmen more than upper classmen to look for the future of his program, because he or she can make up for a bad year this year if he or she has a great season the following year. In conclusion, from all the papers and information I have read over the past couple of weeks it is clear and obviously how to define a good, moralistic person who is a coach. A coach is not defined by the wins he or she gets on the court, field, or arena; but by the athletes he or she develops while they are in his or her program. From the many parts of coaching we hit in this paper many of them seem to boil down to who the coach is morally, if he or she are morally a bad person they will not most likely be a good coach. From building these athletes in to the person they will develop in to as a man or woman, these coaches lay the building blocks for these boys and girls. If they lay the foundation poorly either it will affect the structure immediately and someone will have to fix it or it will build up until it all collapses later in life. It is very important that when they men and women are given the opportunity to lay the foundation of the lives of our boys and girls that they mak e the right, moralistic decisions that will make them grow in amazing men and women. It is important if you are going to build a house to put in a correct, secure foundation; because if you do not then the possibility of the house being damaged later on is more of a higher possibility. That is why when you go to build a house or a building you make sure you have good, competent builder to secure a foundation that will last for generations. In this metaphor the coach being the builder and the boys and girls being the foundation of a house really works well as it shows the possibilities of where the coaching will take the athletes in their futures. When we look for someone to coach our young boys and girls we should take more care to look into the person to verify they will the type of person to make our boys and girls in to the best kids they can be and if they become good athletes too then that is the bonus. We live in the era of people looking for a coach who is going to get wins, but this is a faulty ideal because if the coach mistreats the athletes or does not grow them then you can be doing more harm than good. We need to be more focused on a coach that develops hard work through encouragement, not through punishment. I do think sometimes punishment is needed, but some coaches use punishment as a fear tactic to push athletes in the wrong way. This idea of coaching definitely will cause some athletes to perform, but others definitely will not respond well to this coaching style. As we continue through this new generation of athletes I think more data will come out after seeing the effects of coaching on the last few generations of athletes, at this point we will find out just what the poor coaches caused and what the good coaches created out of these boys and girls.

Fate and the Deaths of Romeo and Juliet in William Shakespeare's Play Before judging to what extent Fate was responsible for the deaths of Romeo and Juliet, we must first answer the question: what is fate? According to the Oxford English Dictionary, fate is the 'inevitable destiny or necessity destined term of life; doom.' On a more basic level, fate can be described as a preplanned sequence of events influencing one's life. In Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, is it true to say that Fate was the sole contributor to the deaths of the young couple, or was their demise brought about by the mistakes of others? In the modern world, most people choose to believe that they have a sense of responsibility and can control their own lives. They suppose that their problems are caused by the actions of themselves or those influencing them. From one viewpoint, it is true to say that the deaths of Romeo and Juliet were caused by the mistakes made by themselves and others: the influence of fate was almost nonexistent. Four characters in the play intensely manipulate the tragic path of the young couple: (apart from Romeo and Juliet themselves) Mercutio, the Nurse, Tybalt and the Friar. Mercutio, one of Romeo's friends and a supporter of the Montague household, changed the course of events by encouraging Romeo to go the Capulet's masquerade and duelling with Tybalt in town. If Mercutio had not encouraged Romeo to go to the Capulet's dance, the couple would never have met and their deaths would have been averted. But was Romeo destined to meet Juliet, regardless of the actions of others? If Mercutio had not taunted Tybalt in town whilst out with Ro... ...tement does not make Juliet feel any better however, as she promptly commits suicide! Shakespeare again chooses to place the blame on a higher power rather than an individual, signifying his desire to make the audience believe that no one person or thing was responsible for the deaths of the young couple but fate. After looking at the two viewpoints as to who was to blame for the deaths of the young couple, the countless references to fortune and fate make it easy to conclude that Fate was to a great extent responsible. It seems apparent that Shakespeare meant for his audience to interpret the happenings of the play as influenced by some higher power, and if fate really does control everything about our lives then it would be sensible to assume that the actions of all the characters in the play were also fated.

Methods of Study in Economics Essay

This method is also called as abstract, analytical and priority method. Under this method, laws are deduced in a logical manner. On the basis of certain fundamental assumptions or accepted axioms (principles) or truths which have been established and handed down from generation to generation, the required conclusions are found out. This method is called as abstract since it is based on abstract reasoning and not actual facts. However, actual situation may differ from what deductive logic suggests. For example, it is assumed that the man is rational and on the basis of this it is deduced that he will buy cheap and sell dear ones. However, in actual situation this may not happen because of the absence of proper knowledge and market conditions. The principle steps in the process of deriving economic generalizations through deductive logic are: 1.perception of the problem; 2.defining the technical terms and making the appropriate assumptions; 3.deducing hypothesis and; 4.testing of hypothesis deduced. Through the use of deductive method, many theories and generalizations have been established in economics. It is called as inverse relationship between the price and quantity demanded, the direct relationship between the price and quantity supplied etc. However, this method also suffers from certain handicaps such as (i) assumptions generally turn out to be untrue or partially true; (ii) valid conclusions cannot be drawn in the absence of proper knowledge of the whole situation and (iii) it is dangerous to claim universal validity for the economic generalizations so deduced. Inductive method: According to this method, conclusions are drawn on the basis of collection and analysis of the facts which are relevant to the inquiry. The logic in this case proceeds from the particular to the general. The generalizations are based on observation of individual examples. The principle steps in this method are †¢Perception of the problem; †¢Collection, classification and analysis of data by using appropriate statistical techniques; †¢Finding out the reasons for the relationship established through statistical analysis and to set rules for the verification of the principles. Becoming an Effective Leader Essay

I have so many ideas of what an effective leader should be that I often feel overwhelmed and cannot imagine how I will become the ideal leader that I want to be. There are many effective leadership styles at my work place. I learn from them everyday. I have also read almost all the modules and sometimes I would read articles on leadership out of the magazines. In my research, I have discovered that there are many different styles of leadership and most are effective, if used in the right situation. What I have taught to myself is how to be flexible. Depends on the situations, e.g. when I started at Weber Mfg, I had to deal with employees who have lost their sense of commitment due to many circumstances. Their self-esteem was low and I strongly felt that my 100% support is very important in building their confidence. I needed to let them know when they did a bad job and very importantly when they also did a good job in order to boost their self-esteem. I do believe if an employee’s confidence and self-esteem is increased, their commitment, productivity and morale will definitely get better. Being a supervisor at WML, I feel that not only, do I have to make sure that jobs are done on time with the quality expected. I must also have a caring, respectful and responsible attitude towards to my team players. I need to have a lots of patience, must be very careful how I would approach in the conflict situations. I believe that â€Å"BALANCE† is the key of success to becoming an effective leader. I am glad; my company has given me an opportunity to take the MLCP courses. It definitely helped me to improve my skills and knowledge on Developing and coaching an effective team. I definitely appreciate the privilege.

Finally he arrived at the Zheng Zhou and Deug Feng, the temple is thirty minutes far away. This book is divided into not chapters but books. Silas and his best friend, Frank Fencepost, live in a Native Community where it is hard to get along with the white folks that live nearby. The plot contains strong problems that involve drug abuse, racism, violence, and murder. The story starts off with Silas and Frank planning to get somewhere in life and attend mechanic school in British Columbia. Silas older sister, Illiana, is coming back to town from Toronto, Ontario to visit the family with her white husband, Robert McVee. Robert is a top-notch lawyer who really wants Illianas family to accept him. Illiana comes back to find her ex-boyfriend, Gooch, out of jail. Illianas feelings return for him, but she decides to stick with her true love, McVee. Illianas mother, who is very traditional, is worried about her daughter having a family with a white man. She urges Illiana to begin starting a family as soon as possible and to maintain the Native values within her children. The problem calms down once Illiana is showing interest in Native life again and McVee is taking notice to preserving the Native ways as well. Silas meanwhile seems to be experiencing problems with his girlfriend, Sadie, who is having a hard time dealing with the fact that Silas will be going away to mechanic school. A Frigid Length

My poppys house is old. It was originally a colonial farmhouse. Now when most people look at my poppys house they think â€Å"what a mess† or that it needs a lot of work. Both are true. However, to me it is a place of fun, exploration, adventure and learning. His house is located in Tolland, Mass, which is a small hill town. My poppy has over one hundred and eighty acres of land. Most of it is woods, but he also has a beaver pond, a ravine, and a crab apple orchard amongst other things on his property. Hiking to and from these places is a given. The hikes can be long and hard if you are not used to the trails. I always feel good after walking in his woods. Hikes usually don’t occur in the winter, unlike in this story. Winter came early that year. It was cold, icy and very snowy. At my house, down in Agawam, a suburban town, the snow was about a foot deep. In Tolland, however, there’s usually more. My sister and I had packed our overnight bags and were ready for our sleep over at Poppy’s. I was twelve. Emily, being my younger sister by two years, was ten. We couldn’t wait for the fun to start. Our cousins, Isaac and Tim were already up at the farm. I don’t know why we call Poppy’s home â€Å"the farm† seeing as how it really isn’t one any more. Emily was a fourth grader. You could spot her in any crowd, no matter the size, because of her appearance. Despite her fiery hair and lanky height, she has a very quiet and shy personality, or at least she did then. Tim and Isaac were both in fifth grade. Although they were close, their personalities were very different. Tim was the quiet, bookworm and video gamer. He preferred staying inside. Isaac was the loud, hyper active, troublemaker of the family. Often enough, he’d find himself in sticky situations. The morning after Emily and I were dropped off, Poppy suggested we take a hike to the beaver pond. It had frozen solid and Emily, Isaac and I were really excited to see it. Tim, on the other hand, chose to stay back and play on his X-box. Poppy said we’d go around noon. The rest of that morning Isaac practically begged Tim to join us. Tim thought we were crazy though, for wanting to hike in the snow. Soon Poppy and the three of us were bundled up and ready to hike. In the summer we could take the truck most of the way but with all the snow on the ground we were going to have to walk a total of about three miles, there and back. So onward we trudged. All the way, there were puddles that were frozen over and looked a little brownish. We found that when we stepped in them our boots got soaked. About halfway to the pond, Isaac wanted to go out on his own to try to find it himself. Poppy said it was fine, seeing as how Isaac knew the woods really well. Eventually we reached the pond. The scene was beautiful in the winter. Snow had drifted on top of the ice, making it sparkle. The surrounding trees looked like they were from a winter postcard. With the addition of the slight breeze, peace surrounded us. My poppy had gone out on the ice just yesterday and all was fine so he started out again. After asking Poppy if he was sure it was safe, Emily and I started to follow. I still couldn’t keep a bad feeling from whispering in my ear. Poppy was probably seven feet in front of me and I was probably four feet in front of Emily. Just as that whispering stopped nagging at me, I noticed a large patch of light brown on the ice just a few paces in front of Poppy. Something inside of me said to yell: â€Å"Stop!!! Thin Ice!!!† Unfortunately, Poppy didn’t heed my warning quick enough and with one more step, crash went the ice, leaving Poppy in icy water up to his armpits and holding onto the ice in front of him. Emily and my eyes were like saucers and our jaws must have dropped as we edged very slowly over to him. Once we had edged close enough I was too shocked to do anything but Emily bent down in order to help pull him out. Incredibly she managed to do so. In that moment I knew that we had to get back to the house quickly. Poppy was almost completely soaked in icy water in the middle of the winter and he, Emily and I were a mile and a half away from the house surrounded by woods. I was worried about hypothermia setting in. We got out of the area as quick as we could and started our long hike back. About third of the way towards the house the breeze had gotten a little more forceful and we could hear a faint â€Å"Help. Help.† It took us a moment to realize it was Isaac. Poppy told Emily and me to go and find him. Emily took off as quick as someone could possibly run in the snow. I, on the other hand was hesitant. My mind was torn. A large part of me, didn’t want to leave Poppy, still worrying about hypothermia; while the other knew Isaac apparently needed help. When Poppy noticed that I was hanging back he urged me to go on ahead so I started off to find Isaac with one swift, concerned look back at Poppy. I caught up to Emily and together we ran ahead, trying to find where Isaac was. After a while we turned back because we could no longer hear him. So we started back in the direction we came and found Poppy, who was climbing into some bushes. He had found Isaac and was pulling him out of some Mountain Laurels. When Isaac was free from their grasp, he claimed that the bushes were actually pricker-bushes. Then I noticed another problem. Poppy’s pants and jacket were no longer soaked through. Instead there was ice build up about an inch thick. When we knocked on them it felt and sounded as if we were knocking on plywood. When Isaac noticed Poppy’s new iceman look he questioned it. Emily and I explained what had happened, as we started walking. We still had a long way to go. The longer we walked, the more Poppy wanted to keep stopping. I wouldn’t let him stop. Somehow I knew he needed to keep his body heat up. The only way I could think to do that was to keep walking. I also knew that he was getting tired, probably from the extreme cold. That thought of hypothermia scared me as much as it kept me going. I knew what could happen if Poppy didn’t get warm soon, and that was not on my agenda. We eventually came to his once flourishing, but small, blueberry patch. I knew it wasn’t far now. Emily and Isaac decided to go back through the small cemetery. That path was the harder choice. It required more work because the path was not as well used. I, however, stayed with poppy and took the easier and more direct path. I don’t think that Isaac and Emily fully understood the situation and what dangers were possible. I had only just watched a documentary, in school, that had a case of hypothermia in it. I was only in sixth grade at the time, which wasn’t much of an age difference compared with my sister and cousins, but in this situation I realized more than they did. After what seemed like forever, we made it out of the woods. The house was in view now. Thankfully, this time we could walk on the main road. Emily and Isaac exited shortly after us as we headed to the warmth of the house. As soon as we entered the house I said to poppy: â€Å"Get out of those clothes, take a hot shower and then go to bed!† I assured him we would be fine for the time being. Poppy, not paying my advice any attention, just changed clothes. Then he went about his day as if nothing had happened. That night he strongly regretted not listening to me. He was beginning to feel the effects of the day’s events. I remember him telling me that he wished he had had that hot shower, as I suppressed an â€Å"I told you so.† The next day was the day that Poppy would drop us all off at our homes. Within a short amount of time the whole family knew about Poppy’s little icy dip. They were concerned at first, but now these events are just considered a family story. When I look back now, I think of the lessons that these events taught me. One example of this was learning to trust my intuition. Often times it’s those life lessons that are of great value and they can only be taught by experience.

Custom Gear Inc Edited Essay 1.1 INTRODUCTION AND COMPANY BACKGROUND Custom Gear Inc., in Philadelphia, Pa., is a manufacturer of custom made gears ranging in weight from a few ounces to over 50 pounds. The gears are made of different metals depending on the customer’s requirements. Over the past year 40 different types of steel and brass alloys have been used as raw materials. Custom Gear sells its products primarily to engineering research and development laboratories or very small manufacturers. Recently the president of Custom Gear decided to accept a few larger orders for more than 100 gears. Although lower prices were accepted on these orders, they helped pay the overhead. It was found that the large orders caused many of the small orders to wait for a long time before being processed. As a result some deliveries of small orders were late. This report will write on the major problems that arises from the Custom Gear operation, the potential solutions, theories that can be applied in the case study and lastly but not least the conclusion. 2.1 PROBLEMS The root cause lies within the company’s policy. The company allowed the customer to change their design even after the production process has already started. This has contributed to the delay of the production. Other than that, the operation layout was designed ineffectively and inefficiently leading to an increase in their lead-time. Several major problems are identified from the root cause such as lack of processing policy flow, lack of order policy, and ineffective and inefficient layout as well as increase rate of return due to defective product. 2.1 Lack of Processing Policy Flow Lack of processing policy become a burden to Custom Gear where it allow the customer to changes their design even after the production process started. When the customer change the whole blue print, the production of that product will have to stop and wait for new design and raw materials to be clarified and arrived which delay the whole production process. Figure 2.0: Operation Process Flow The process in Figure 2.0 started when a customer wishes to order a gear, the order is taken by sales manager and marketing vice president (James Lord). The customer will specifies the type of gear, quality and raw materials desired by submitting a blue print. Once the order are received, 1 copy is sent to the production supervisor (Joe Irvine), and 1 copy is sent to the controller (Sam Smith). The controller will purchase the order for the raw materials required. These materials often take from 1 to 2 weeks to arrive, depending on the supplier and the type of material ordered. After receiving the raw materials, the supervisor reviews the order received before the starting the milling machine. The raw material, a gear blank, is sent to the Milling Work Centre. In the Milling Work Centre the teeth are cut into the edge of the gear according to the customers specifications. After that, the gear blanks are sent to the Drilling Works Centre, where one or more holes may be drilled in the gear. Then the gear will sent to the Grinding Centre which the gear will do the finishing by put on the gear teeth and the surface of the gear. Next, the gear may be sent to Heat Treating if this operation is required by the customer. After the batch of gears is completed, they are inspected by the next available worker and shipped to the customer.

Concept Of Collaborative Working Social Work Essay Social Work is at an important stage in its development as a profession not only in the United Kingdom but around the world. All professions must be responsive and proactive to changing social and economic climates and conditions if they are to meet the needs of the people they are serving. It is essential for Social Workers to be able to practise in accordance with social work values and to retain a clear professional identity, and at the same time to be able to work effectively with other professional groups and agencies. Although there are many terms used to describe working together with other professions such as joint working, inter-professional working, multi-disciplinary working and inter-agency working the term currently used by the Department of Health publications is collaborative practice (Whittington 2003b). New ways of working that crossed professional boundaries had to be created, in order to allow a more flexible approach to care delivery (Malin et al, 2002). Collaboration in health and social care is a relatively new field of study, with the first major studies being undertaken in the 1980s (Roy, 2001). In health and social care collaborative working is often referred to as Inter-professional working, as it is not just about professionals working together. The patients, clients or service users are a central part of the team. At its simplest the concept of collaboration infers that people from different professional and academic backgrounds form a working relationship for the purpose of enhanced service provision. However, the exact nature of the partnership is likely to be contested, whilst fully integrated joined-up collaborative practice has so far proved elusive. Effective communication is an essential component of the traditional social work roles and responsibilities. It is therefore equally necessary for social workers to also have effective communication skills if they are to promote self-help and empowerment to those whom they are providing a service for. Lishman (1994) reminds us that care managers and providers will have to use a range of communication and interpersonal skills if community care is really to mean care, choice and empowerment of others. Collaborative working implies: conscious interaction between the parties to achieve a common goal (Meads Ashcroft, 2005). It recognises both difference similarity. Collaboration is a process by which members of different disciplines share their skills and expertise to provide a better quality service to patients, clients or service users (Hughes, Hemingway Smith, 2005). The sharing of information means both getting information and giving it. The act of gaining information in Social Work is an essential task the information gained can be used for numerous purposes such as: Making an assessment of need or risk Writing a report Planning an intervention To justify obtaining resource The something or benefit is sometimes called collaborative advantage, and it can be seen as the fuel of collaborative working the greater the potential or actual advantage gained by all parties, the greater the levels of energy fuelling the collaboration. According to Wilson (2008) and Hughes, Hemmingway Smith (2005) inter-professional and collaborative working means considering the service user in a holistic way, and it benefits the service user when different organisations, such as Social Workers, District Nurses, Occupational Therapists and other health professionals come together to provide a better service. These definitions describe collaborative working as the act of people working together toward common goals. Integrated working involves putting the service user at the center of decision making to meet their needs and improve their lives (Dept. Health, 2009). Effective collaboration and interaction will have positive outcomes within a working environment for both the teams working together and the service user. Agencies should be encouraged to share information to ensure that all needs of the service users are met but also to ensure the safety of the service user and the other teams involved. Caring for People (Dept. Health, 1989) stated that successful collaboration required a clear, mutual understanding by every agency of each others responsibilities and powers, in order to make plain how and with whom collaboration should be secured. The government has been promoting inter-agency and collaborative working since the late 80s which also saw a change in the policies set forth by the governments and a legislative backdrop was created to promote self-collaboration between companies. The stated aim has been to create high quality, needs-led, co-ordinated services that maximised choice for the service user. (Payne, 1995). Recent events and media outcries have focused collaborative working solely on Social Work as stated in Pollard, Sellman Senior (2005) and when viewed as a good thing, it is worthwhile to critically examine its benefits and drawbacks. (Leathard, 2003). The old government set forth plans to modernize the Social Services as well as update the NHS. A clear indication of this can be found in NHS Plan (Dept. Health, 2000) and Modernizing the Social Services (Dept. Health, 1998a). This was not in fact a new plan it was part of a growing emphasis stemming from the 1970s. The death of Maria Coldwell in 1974 meant there were questions asked why professionals were not able to protect children who they had identified as most at risk. The Cleveland Inquiry 1988 resulted in the direct opposite of 1974 when the methods of the Social Services were deemed too strict and over powering, it was deemed that children were removed from their families when there was little concrete evidence of harm or abuse (Butler-Sloss, 1988), with too much emphasis put on the medical opinion. The Munro Report (2010) stated that other service agencies cannot and should not replace Social Workers, but there is a requirement for agencies to engage professionally about children, young people and families on their caseloads. The Childrens Act 2004 was introduced after the public inquiry into the death of Victoria Climbià © in 2000; the same public inquiry also resulted in the Every Child Matters movement. The failure to collaborate effectively was highlighted as one of many missed opportunities by the inquiry into the tragic death of Victoria Climbià © (Laming, 2003) and Baby Peter (Munro, 2010). Expressing what you all want to achieve in clear, outcomes-oriented language, and being able to continually recheck those outcomes as your work together proceeds, is the single most important key to successful collaboration. However, it is actually quite difficult to express outcomes in ways that are unambiguous and clearly understood by all of the potential or actual collaborators. The quality of communication is vital. Poor communication is often behind many of the disputes that threaten to stall collaborative working relationships. Clear lines of communication need to be established across the institutions that make up a consortium to ensure everyone is aware of and is able to carry out the accepted policies and procedures. Accountabilities, in particular, should be well defined. Participation and involvement of service user is also critical in the Social Work field. This after all is the main beneficiary of the collaborative working scheme and your goal as a Social Worker is to meet their needs and goals. If you show the service user respect they too will give you a mutual respect which will allow the Social Workers and other elements of the collaborative team to achieve their common goals. However beneficiaries do not have to be aware that an activity is being delivered in partnership for the partnership to be successful. Regular reviews and users feedback can help measure its impact. Collaborative advantage will be achieved when something unusually creative is produced perhaps an objective is met that no organisation could have produced on its own and when each organisation, through collaboration, is able to achieve its own objectives better than it could alone. (Huxham, 1996). Huxham was showing that collaboration will work when it is done properly, and when we as Social Workers put aside any prejudices that are under lying in our working mentality and also our personal mentality, we will work well with other fields and practices to form a more efficient and organised service. By learning with, from and about one another practitioners can understand respective roles and responsibilities, generate mutual trust, strengthen relationships and improve collaborative practice (Barr et al 2005). To summarise and conclude the development of collaborative working will undoubtedly require a change in culture and values amongst health and social care professionals; however it is working and developing quickly and for the better of not just the collaborating agencies but also for the service users.

Anthem: The Process of Liberation Many years ago, I read my first book by Ayn Rand, Anthem. I completed the book in about four hours. At the time, I was not mature enough to fully appreciate Anthem's powerful symbolism. My attitude as I read the beginning of the book was one of indifference and confusion, maturing only later into concern and vigorous interest. This experience began a new phase in my intellectual development that soon led me to read Atlas Shrugged. I then started on Ayn Rand's non-fictional works. My understanding of Rand's philosophical system, however, came piece by piece. There was no one instant of recognition, no single ``aha.'' Until recently, I was not fully aware that I had been affected so deeply. My progress was step-by-step and I had never looked all the way back. As I began to read Anthem for a second time, I found myself in acute pain, even at the first paragraph. I continued to read it feeling much as a person would when touring a concentration camp, for, in effect, that was exactly what I was doing. There was not one hint of levity in my mood; I do not even recall breathing. I was truly looking all the way back. At the end of chapter nine, when Equality 7-2521 is alone, in the most profound sense of the word, with his Golden One, she says slowly, ``We are one ... alone ... and only ... and we love you who are one ... alone ... and only,'' I feared I could tolerate the book no longer. I had finally understood that profound sense of loneliness and despair a person can feel when they want to say ``I love you,'' but cannot say ``I''. Since the beginning of civilization, man has always tried to resource his surrounding for his own benefits and needs. In the early times, man sufficed his need for energy by using wood in terms of fire for cooking and other purposes.As and when the technology started developing we started venturing into the field of advanced sciences for extracting maximum energy for population needs. Fossil fuels have been the greatest source of energy that has been exploited for a very long time. But in the time of growing population and global warming reaching new peaks every year, the time for alternative process of energy has come.One of the major challenges faced by today’s world is the sequential balancing between the impact on the climate and nature due to global warming and the immediate requirement of sufficing energy needs to vast and demanding population. To wriggle out of this situation, consideration has to be given on alternatives that can balance the equation and be beneficial for a longer term. Carbon sequestration is one of the latest technologies that have been put to use for the very same purpose. It is a process which would greatly reduce the carbon emission from high industrial belts and would to a great extent decelerate the process of global warming.The system or its principle works on two stages; first is capturing the carbon dioxide from the environment and then storing in soil or oceans. However this technology or this scientific innovation is pretty much new and the process of capturing carbon dioxide is on far later stages than the technological advancement on the process of storing it. The primary stage of capturing works on the simple principle of photosynthesis in plants. The carbon dioxide is taken by plants from the environment and it gives out oxygen back to the atmosphere.The carbon that is left within the plant is amalgamated into biomass and is very promptly released into the soil. It is estimated that there is a lot of carbon in the soil compared to the environment and due to which the concept of carbon sequestration seems validated when it transfuses carbon deep in the soil. How successfully did the liberals handle the constitutional crisis in 1901 – 1911? In 1909 Lloyd George was the Chancellor, he was in charge of the countries money and how they spend it and how much they tax the public. He needed to increase the budget some how to pay for battle ships because England was in a arms race with Germany. When taxing the people he only wanted to increase the tax for the rich, he did not see it would be fair to increase the taxes for the already poor and those struggling to pay the tax already; however he came across a problem.The House of Lords had been the most powerful part of parliament, they had the power to block any bills and laws coming form the House of Commons. They had recently blocked the Education Act. This had been tradition for the past 200 years allowing them to dismiss any bill, this was incredibly bias though, most bills were passed to benefit the poor and to charge the rich. This bill would easily pass the Commons but not the Lords , Asquith’s solution was to ask King Edward VII (who had the highest power in the country) to create peers.In doing this the Liberals would be able to out vote the Conservative lords. The King agreed to this but he suddenly died in May 1910. This presented the Liberals with another step to over come. The next to the air was George V; his ambition was to get two parties to come to some kind of agreement without resorting to making new peers. A constitutional conference was held between June and November. The Conservatives offered to reform the composition of lords, but the liberals were determined to reduce the power of the constitution.The Conservatives also tried insisted the lords should have the power to veto any change in the constitution, enabling them to block the home rule for Ireland. Asquith was under strong pressure from the Irish to reject the Conservatives’ proposal. George V finally agreed he would create enough new peers to pass the parliament bill as lon g as the Liberal’s one a general election fought on this issue held in December. The Election left the Liberals and Conservatives with exactly the same number of seats, 272 each.However because the Liberals had a strong backing from Labour, who had 47 seats, and from the Irish Nationalists, who had 84 seats, the Liberals were able to rely on a working majority and would remain in government. This parliament act helped make the British constitution more democratic. They stopped the lord’s form controlling parliament and what happened to the country. For this reason alone I believe the Liberals were successful with the constitution crisis, however they would have not been able to do it alone, without the help of Labour and the Irish Nationalists the conservatives would have been in power.

How the teachings of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab influenced everyday life in Saudi Arabia

Introduction Commins (2006, p. 97) asserts that the teachings of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab have influenced the contemporary political and cultural environment in Saudi Arabia. This religious movement, commonly referred to as the Wahhabi movement started in central Arabia in the mid-18th Century and grew because of the preaching and scholarship of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab. According to Zayd (2006, p. 41), Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab was a scholar of Islamic jurisprudence who received his education in Mesopotamia and Hijaz and then returned to Najd (central Arabia) to advocate for Islamic reforms. This paper explores how his teachings influenced the everyday life in Saudi Arabia. Allen (2006, p.89) says that Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab was concerned with the practices of the people of Najd, which he regarded as polytheistic and wanted them to stop the practices. He wanted reforms that would remove all practices that were added to Islam after the death of Mohammad. He was against practices like using votive and sacrificial offerings, veneration of caves, stones and trees, celebration of birthdays of prophets, praying to saints and making pilgrimages to special mosques and tombs. These were common practices in Najd and the people here regarded them as being in compliance with Islamic teachings. However, to Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab they were polytheistic. He was concerned with these practices because he perceived them as being lax in terms of adherence to Islamic law. In addition to this, he was also concerned with the fact that the people were reluctant to perform religious devotions like disregard to obligatory prayers, not showing care to the widows and orph ans, rampant adultery and failure to give women their fair share of inheritance. These practices formed the basis of his preaching as he was determined to make the people change their ways of life and start living in full compliance with Islamic laws. Weston (2008, p. 11) asserts that his teachings revolved around the breaches of Islamic laws and emphasised the need to comply with all customary practices like jahiliya. He initially encountered opposition but eventually overcame it by forming an alliance with Muhammad ibn Saud, a local chieftain. This alliance ensured that his influence endured through difficult times because Muhammad ibn Saud was very powerful in southern Najd. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab and his descendants converted the alliance that was initially for political loyalty into religious obligation that had to be followed by everyone. In his teachings, he insisted that all Muslims must present an oath of allegiance (bayah) to Muslim leaders when alive so that they can get redemption when they die. He emphasised that Muslim leaders must be given unquestionable allegiance from the people as long as they are providing leadership that is in full conformity with Islamic laws. He held the perception that the purpose of the Muslim community was to be a living embodiment of Islamic laws (Hegghammer & Lacroix 2011, p. 64). The responsibility of ensuring that the community knows and conforms to the laws of God lay squarely on the legitimate rulers. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab and his followers then started a jihad targeting the backsliding Muslims in the region to ensure that there is total obedience to Muslim rulers and God. This was the beginning of religious intolerance in Saudi Arabia. Fatah (2008, p. 77) claims that the key message in the teachings of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab was tawhid (oneness of God). Tawhid is very important in Saudi Arabia and it is emphasised by both state and religious leaders. It is for this reason that its adherents call the movement as the call for unity (ad dawa lil tawhid). He was against third party intercession and all prayer rituals because he considered them as leading to shirk. This is why he objected Sufi mysticism, celebrating the birthdays of prophets and Shia m ourning ceremonies which were considered as religious festivals. As a consequence grave marking, building of tombs and any other shrines are forbidden in Wahhabism. However this is partly practised in Saudi Arabia because the shrine of Prophet Muhammad is in the country and Muslims go there to pay pilgrimage. They only accept authority from the Sunna and Quran and disregard any reinterpretation of the two books on issues that were already settled by the previous jurists. They totally remain opposed to reinterpretation but give allowance for interpreting the areas not decided by the earlier jurists. Livingstone (2011, p. 50) suggests that they literally interpret the Sunna and Quran and aim towards enforcing parochial Najd practices. The religious and political leadership work collectively in ensuring that there is conformity in behaviour throughout the country. Life in Saudi Arabia is guided by Wahhabism as the government remains committed to ensuring that there is full compliance w ith Islamic laws (Brym & Lie 2010, p. 31). In addition to this, the government has supported the Wahhabi literal interpretations of right and wrong behaviour. Prayer performance in a ritually correct and punctual manner is required of all men. Livingstone (2011, p.54) says that all the believers are forbidden from taking wine because literally, the Quran forbids it. They have extended this ban to include all intoxicating drinks and stimulants like tobacco. Both men and women are required to dress modestly in accordance with the Quran. These conservative regulations have direct influence on all aspects of life in Saudi Arabia. The leaders of Saudi Arabia support the conservative religious establishment and monitor closely the people who present potential threats to their regimes (Lacroix & Holoch 2011, p. 96). In the Middle East, Saudi Arabia ranks as one of the most conservative and restrictive countries with those who do not subscribe to the Islamic religion barred from practicing their faith even in private (DeLong-Bas 2007, p. 66). It is this harsh, conservative and restrictive environment that has led to radicalisation of some people in Saudi Arabia as they have no tolerance to other religious faiths. In school the religious curriculum teaches students that there are two types of people; the first one is the Salafis (Wahhabis) who are the chosen ones and will go to heaven because they are the winners. The other group are Muslims, Jews, Christians and all other religions. These ones are either, enervators, or deniers of God (kafirs) or they put their gods next to God (mushrak). The Sunni Muslims are called enervators because they do things that are proscribed by Salafis like celebrating the birthday of Prophet Mohammed (Husain 2009, p. 15). All these groups of people are not accepted by the Saudi Arabians as Muslims and as such, they are supposed to be hated, persecuted and even killed. This is what the government is encouraging and has led the Saudi Arabia ns to be intolerant to any other dissenting views on religion because of the rapid radicalisation and fundamentalism (Allen 2006, p. 77). This paper has shown that the teachings of Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab influenced everyday life in Saudi Arabia. His teachings, which were originally intended to bring reforms to the Islamic faith, have gone to the extent of radicalising the people of Saudi Arabia. As the paper indicates, they have no tolerance for other religions. To them, the people of other religions should be hated, persecuted and even killed. Huestis Insurance Group is the parent company of Hovey company which manages the Atlantic Provinces and the Hovey company can also be understood to be an agent or the broker for the Huestis Group (Nijssen & Frambach 2001). A road map was constructed which would help to complete the work and fulfilling the major objectives and plans of the tasks. The first task as mentioned before was to design the company’s website. For this, I selected the three major areas of the company namely life, personal and commercial insurance. Each of the topic had a different color different than the others and consisted of all the information about that type of program of insurance. Every category would have a sub-category for example liability insurance and commercial insurance under it. I also added some details about every category of insurance in order to motivate and attract people to buy the insurance(Nijssen & Frambach 2001). The home-page of the website will consist of the slogan of the company which is ‘Insurance is the Solution’ that will give an overall idea of the company to the people. The website will also consist of the contact numbers of the company as well as their toll free number. The next step was to meet different designers and claim the best design and offer for the website. These steps were important in order to create the marketing strategy for the company on the internet. The first task for me to fulfill was the online marketing for the company (Berry & Wilson 2001). The next objective that i had to fulfill was to create a plan by attracting potential consumers so that they go through the website of the company and come to know about the current services and products(Berry & Wilson 2001). Once to website is fully constructed, I would need to look for different strategies on how to let the customers know about the website and its services. 1.2 Stakeholders The insurance agencies and the brokers mostly sell similar services and prod
